I started my professional life as a research psychologist (not the "do you love your mother" kind). I enjoyed research and teaching, but noticed that I spent most of my non-classroom time writing and editing, often to help other people.

When I left academia, all the "you should be a writer" admonitions followed me to job interviews. I've been squeezing in part-time writing and editing jobs for about 9 years, so now I am happily doing it full time.

Mount Vernon's Wartburg Celebrates 150th With Fall Festival MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Wartburg, an award-winning provider of senior services, celebrated the start of its 150th anniversary with a fall festival on Oct. 3.The festival included music and dance recitals, children's activities, a drum circle, a farmers market and food from local restaurants. Nearly 500 people attended. Even those who did not win one of the many prizes enjoyed the festival. Danish Artist Visits Fox Meadow High School YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- International artist Molly Haslund visited Fox Meadow High School and helped create a new work with the help of students. Haslund, who is from Denmark, is one of the 60 international artists invited by the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Arts to participate in the Peekskill Project. Haslund believes that the best way to learn about art is to participate in it, so she brought chalk and giant wooden compasses that she had designed and built in Denmark. HV Renegades Throw Monster Bash at Dutchess Stadium DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. – The Hudson Valley Renegades are having their fifth annual Rascal’s Monster Bash on Oct. 31 at Dutchess County Stadium. The Renegades encourage children to come in costume; local vendors will provide trick-or-treat stations around the concourse, and there will activities for the whole family. Blithe Spirit Haunts Brewster High School BREWSTER, N.Y. -- Noel Coward's comedy "Blithe Spirit" is coming to the Brewster High School Performing Center starting Nov. 5.The comedy was first staged in 1941 and has never left the stage. The most recent Broadway production was in 2009. In the play, successful Charles Condomine and his wife Ruth invite an eccentric medium to their home so Charles can gather material for his next book.
