Frederick Leon Hovasapian, 81, Rhinebeck Resident
RHINEBECK, N.Y. -- Frederick Leon Hovasapian, of Rhinebeck and formerly of Croton-on-Hudson and New York City, died on Thursday, Jan. 14. He was 81. Born in New York City, Hovasapian was a first-generation Armenian-American, as his parents Peggy Tighe and Pusant Hovasapian, emigrated from Turkey.
He attended Dewitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, where he excelled in sports, particularly baseball and football, and he was athlete of the year of the 4,000-plus all-male student body, when he was a senior. He had a full scholarships, first at Stanford University, then Columbia University.

Renell Rios, 76, Longtime West Nyack Resident
WEST NYACK, N.Y. -- Longtime West Nyack resident Renell Rios died on Saturday, Jan. 16. He was 76.
Rios was a jewelry designer in Manhattan for 45 years, retiring in 2013. He was also an avid tennis player.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Emma; children Erik, Alexander, Pamela, Jennifer and Aimee; and five grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home, 100 Franklin Ave., in Pearl River.

Pauline Silver, 102, Chestnut Ridge Resident
CHESTNUT RIDGE, N.Y. -- Chestnut Ridge resident Pauline Silver died on Saturday, Jan. 16. She was 102.
Silver "had a full meaningful life," said information from Hellman Memorial Chapels. "She spent the latter part of her years at the Promenade of Chestnut Ridge where she was well cared for and happy."
She is survived by two daughters Shelly and her husband, Sheldon; and Marlene; grandchildren Marni, Craig, Haran, Rachel and Matthew; and great-grandsons Justin, Matthew and Evan.

WAYNE, N.J. -- Helen Marie "Dutchie" (Mellberg) Gainey, of Wayne and formerly of Ridgewood, died Friday, Jan. 15. She was 91.
Gainey was born and raised in Ithaca, N.Y. A registered nurse, she worked at Cornell University for many years. She also was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Ridgewood.

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. -- Cliffside Park resident Eleni (Tasiopoulos) Demopoulos died Sunday, January 17. She was 64.
A homemaker, Demopoulos was born in Greece and came to the United States in 1969.
She is survived by her husband, Panagiotis; children Tina, Vicki and her husband Robert Hixson, and Rita and her husband Donald Keane Jr.; grandchildren Kaitlyn, Alexander Peter, Natalie, Eleni and Zoe; siblings Voula Sfikas, George Tasiopoulos, Nick Tasiopoulos, Konstantina Glavas, Anastasia Merkos, Angela Savvas and Theodore Tasiopoulos; and many loving nieces and nephews.
