Rats Spotted At Westlake Middle School Before Last Week's Sightings MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- Last week's appearance of rats at Westlake Middle School was not the first time the school has dealt with a rat problem. During the 2014-2015 school year, rats were spotted in the district, which was blamed on renovation work at EF Academy. The Department of Health visited the district on three occasions to investigate the rodent complaints and did not find an infestation, according to Superintendent of Schools Susan Guiney. The Bears knocked off Putnam Valley 53-42 on Sunday. It is the program's first Section One title since 2007. Briarcliff next faces Marlboro on Wednesday at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. Junior Jack Reich, who had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Briarcliff, was named MVP. Briarcliff, 23-1, has won 22 games in a row.

Peekskill Firefighters Battle Blaze On Harrison Avenue PEEKSKILL, N.Y. --  Firefighters successfully contained a fire at a two-story residential building on Harrison Avenue Monday afternoon. The fire started at 5:09 p.m. at the back of the building and extended up a a back wall according to Deputy Chief John Pappas. Pappas said there was minor smoke damage inside but the fire caused little damage. "Most of the damage was confined to the outside wall and staircase on the 2nd floor," Pappas said.

Bedford Resident Visits Washington State BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Bedford resident Bea Rhodes spent her holidays in the Pacific Northwest. Rhodes, a Daily Voice community advisor, visited Washington  to see her sister. "It's difficult to know what was a favorite part of my trip," Rhodes said. "I really enjoyed all aspects. It was a wonderful trip, even rain couldn't put a damper on it. It's a really pretty, clean, well-kept area." Rhodes did say the Space Needle was a bit of a disappointment but it is still a must see.

Higginson decided to travel to Denmark after learning that she had ancestors from the country. "I was excited to explore my Nordic roots," Higginson, who went to Copenhagen said.
