I started my professional life as a research psychologist (not the "do you love your mother" kind). I enjoyed research and teaching, but noticed that I spent most of my non-classroom time writing and editing, often to help other people.

When I left academia, all the "you should be a writer" admonitions followed me to job interviews. I've been squeezing in part-time writing and editing jobs for about 9 years, so now I am happily doing it full time.

Yonkers Mayoral Candidates Compete In First Debate YONKERS, N.Y. -- Democratic incumbent Mayor Mike Spano and his Republican challenger Bill Nuckel had their first debate on Tuesday.Nuckel is a former councilman who became an executive at Verizon. He claimed that Mayor Spano does not deserve a second term in office because of mismanagement, said News 12. Irvington Students Compete in World Maths Day IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Children in grades one through five practiced math skills as they competed in live games against same-grade children across the world.The World Education Games organized the math event that took place Oct. 13-15. Students at Dows Lane Elementary School and Main Street School logged onto their computers on Oct. 14, which is World Maths Day. Harvey Students' Film Screens in New York City BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The All-American High School Film Festival (AAHSFF) in New York City opens this weekend.Three sophomores from The Harvey School, Jared Peraglia of Cortland Manor, Pierce Steinberg of Mahopac, and Josef Nardi of New Canaan, Conn. are thrilled that their film will have a public screening and compete for awards. The film, "Walter and the Pink Frosted Donut", was originally 33 minutes long. Peraglia, who wrote wrote, edited, and directed the film had to cut it down to 20 minutes to meet festival requirement. Steinberg and Nardi both worked on the production.

Court Offers 15 Years In Prison To Stamford Sex Assault Suspects STAMFORD, Conn. — Two men who were arrested on charges of abducting and sexually assaulting an intoxicated or drugged woman have been offered 15-year prison sentences in a plea deal, reported the Stamford Advocate.In December, a witness called the police to report a man dragging an unconscious woman into Augusto Carreras' apartment, the Advocate said. The first officer on the scene saw the man, Ruben Enio Sandoval, assaulting the woman, the Advocate said. Enchanted Castle Offers Up Halloween Fun In Fairfield FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary will present The Enchanted Caste: A Magical Storybook Experience from Oct. 24 to 31. Darien Arts Center Offers Halloween Crafts for Children DARIEN, Conn. -- The Darien Arts Center is having a crafts workshop, "Halloween Fun for your Little One" Saturday, Oct. 24.The workshop is open to children ages 5 and older. The fee is $30. The workshop features multiple art stations so children can sample a variety of art techniques and create unique Halloween crafts to take home.
