An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. Community Rallies Around Family After 6-Year-Old Poughkeepsie Boy Dies A family that recently immigrated to Poughkeepsie is raising money to help pay for the cost of burying their 6-year-old child back home in Guatemala. A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of Walter Arias, who passed away last week after battling digestive issues. Almost $1,500 has been raised as of March 31. Tonya Pezzullo's in-laws own Milanese, an Italian restaurant in Poughkeepsie, and Walter's cousins live above the restaurant. State Senate Passes Law Curbing Illicit Sale Of Over The Counter Drugs The State of New York is aiming to make it harder for black market sales of over the counter drugs and other household products. The Senate passed a bill, proposed by Sen. David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester), outlaws the sale of products such as aspirin, ibuprofen or baby formula by any vendor who is not licensed to sell these products or expressly authorized by the manufacturer and gives consumers another protection on price gouging and product tampering. Peekskill Superintendent Announces Resignation PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Peekskill Superintendent David Fine announced his resignation Friday. The Board of Education is expected to accept his resignation at the April 4 board meeting. Dr. Lorenzo Licopoli will be appointed Acting Superintendent. Fine's resignation is effective June 30, though he is using his accumulated leave time to bow out before that, the board said. Reward Offered After Three Dogs Found Starved To Death In Westchester MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- A reward is being offered in an attempt to find the person who allegedly starved three dogs to death in Mount Vernon. On March 24, Mount Vernon Police and the Mount Vernon Shelter received an anonymous call about three dead dogs being discovered on the 200 block of South 1st Avenue in Mount Vernon. Two of the deceased dogs were removed by an unknown person before law enforcement arrived, according to the SPCA. Police found the body of a male pit bull puppy, six to eight months old, discovered inside a crate, the SPCA said. A necropsy revealed he died of starvation, …

Man Sexually Abused 10-Year-Old Three Times, Yorktown Police Say MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. -- Yorktown Police arrested and charged a 47-year-old Mohegan Lake man with three counts of sexual abuse Friday. Police allege Matthew Hainey sexually abused a 10-year-old three times at his home in March. An order of protection was issued and Hainey was ordered held on $500,000 bail. Hainey is due back in court on April 6. Further details, including the gender of the child, have not been released by Yorktown Police.
