An (almost) lifelong Westchester resident, Sam has reported on all facets of Westchester since he graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in print journalism, including stints at North County News and The Examiner. Matthew Landahl Takes Command As Beacon School Superintendent BEACON, N.Y. -- Matthew Landahl is at the top of the class in Beacon. Landahl is the new superintendent of the Beacon City School District, officially starting his job on July 1. Landahl was hired in January on a three-year-contract. He will make $190,000 in his first year. Being superintendent in Beacon is like teaching the Defense Against The Dark Arts at Hogwarts- since 2006, there have been nine different superintendents. Lowey Cites 'Vile' Trump Comments As Some Fellow Dems Eye 25th Amendment Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) said President Donald Trump's tweets about Bronxville's Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," were "vile" and "heinous." Terry Elsberry, St. Matthew’s Church Rector, Calls It A Career BEDFORD, N.Y. -- For the past 23 years, Terry Elsberry has seen people at their highest and lowest points. Elsberry, who lives in Greenwich, recently retired as rector of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Bedford after serving for 23 years. As rector, Elsberry oversaw a period of change for the church. It increased in parishioners and doubled the size of the parish house. It celebrated its bicentennial in 2010 and started a preschool and chamber music concert series. Westchester ACE Challenge Winners Announced Some Westchester students are getting free passes to Rye Playland, thanks to some academic excellence. Peekskill Names New Interim Superintendent PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Mary Keenan Foster is now the interim superintendent of the Peekskill City School District. Foster was appointed last month and started her job last week. Lorenzo Licopoli, who was serving as acting superintendent, moved into a consulting role. David Fine announced his resignation as superintendent earlier this year. Foster will serve as interim superintendent until the Peekskill Board of Education appoints a permanent superintendent. Police Recover Shotgun Following Yorktown Hostage Standoff YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- The standoff between police and a 40-year-old Yorktown man Tuesday night lasted two hours, Lt. Timothy Geitner said Wednesday. David Grolz, 40, was arrested and charged with assault in the third degree and menacing in the second degree, both Class A misdemeanors after the incident on the 3700 block of Crompond Road (Route 202). Westchester Inducts Five Into Sports Hall Of Fame Frank McLaughlin, Rick O'Keeffe, Jimmy Roberts, Paul Natale and Rich Leaf were inducted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame by the selection committee last week. Amelia Earhart, Wife Of Westchester Man, May Have Survived Crash A new photo is causing speculation that Amelia Earhart, who was married to Rye's George Putnam, survived a crash landing in the Marshall Islands 80 years ago. A History Channel special, "Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence," airing Sunday, features a photo of a woman who resembles Earhart, along with her navigator, Fred Noonan, on a dock. Analysis done for History Channel and NBC News says the photo appears legitimate and that she may have been captured by the Japanese after she crashed.
