I started my professional life as a research psychologist (not the "do you love your mother" kind). I enjoyed research and teaching, but noticed that I spent most of my non-classroom time writing and editing, often to help other people.

When I left academia,  all the "you should be a writer" admonitions followed me to job interviews. I've been squeezing in part-time writing and editing jobs for about 9 years, so now I am happily doing it full time.

Sheep And Wool Festival Returns to Dutchess County RHINEBECK, N.Y.  -- The New York State Sheep and Wool Festival returns to the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck on Oct. 17 and 18.Tickets are $12 at the gate for one day, $17 for a weekend pass. Festival goers can buy a day pass for $9 if they buy tickets early. The Sheep and Wool Festival features information about the care and feeding of wool-producing livestock, workshops, demonstrations, and sales. Beacon Sloop Club Prepares For Pumpkin Festival BEACON, N.Y. -- The Beacon Sloop Club will host its free annual Pumpkin Festival Sunday at Pete and Toshi Seeger Park. The festival features Hudson Valley pumpkins, from small to huge, and from perfectly formed to not-so-perfectly formed. Festival visitors can try pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup and hot and cold apple cider. There also will be live music on solar-powered stages, children's activities and environmental displays. South Norwalk Library Presents Stage Play On Life In Radio NORWALK, Conn. -- The South Norwalk Branch Library will present the play "All I Need to Know About Life I Learned on the Radio" by Kacey Morabito Green on Saturday, Oct. 17.The play includes songs and stories about working at WHUD, a Hudson Valley radio station. Crowds Turn Out For Annual Arts Festival At Greenwich's Bruce Museum GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Bruce Museum held its annual outdoor arts festival last Saturday and Sunday. Artists from across the country showed sculptures, drawings, paintings, photography and other media. Visitors to the festival could talk with the artists as well as buy their work. They also enjoyed demonstrations, live music, and food from local vendors. The Bruce Museum holds two outdoor festivals a year. The other, in May, is a crafts festival.

Despite the ghosts, the performances are appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for children 12 and younger. New Canaan's Goldenberry Supports Strays And Others With Fundraiser NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Goldenberry, a shop specializing in gourmet treats and gifts from Britain, is hosting a fundraiser for Strays and Others, a nonprofit, no-kill animal welfare agency.Goldenberry will offer a selection of sweets and savories as well as wine and other beverages on Thursday, Oct. 22. A portion of the $5 donation supports Strays and Others, as will raffle tickets. Interested donors can also contribute through the agency's facebook page. Goldenberry's fund raiser will run from 5:15 p.m.to 8 p.m.
