David Mitchell Jr. 89 and his 87-year-old wife Helen Mitchell died in the blast in the 1400 block of Riverview Road in Crescent Township, Allegheny County, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner. The was felt about a mile away just before 9 a.m. on March 12, officials told the press at a news conference at 11:30 a.m. that day. The Feb. 16 explosion at 347 Silver Ridge Dr., in Sterling, was caused by a leaking 500-gallon propane tank, the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office (LCFR-FMO) said. The investigation showed that propane leaked into the tank and around the structure and was ignited by an ignition source, that remains unknown. The blast happened just before noon, sparking a two-alarm fire at the Hibernia Road home in West Brandywine Township, NBC Philadelphia reports. Two of the children were airlifted to area hospitals while the other two children were taken by EMS with unknown injuries, officials told the news outlet.
