According to a new report by Safewise, several communities in the region were ranked among the 10 safest cities in the state for 2025 based on FBI crime data.

Newark Man Who Stabbed Victim 10 Times In East Orange Learns Fate: Prosecutor
A 34-year-old Newark man was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday, May 30, after previously being convicted of stabbing a man in East Orange 10 times, authorities said.
On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, Dwayne Barbour waited for Daren Brooks, 31, with a knife at an address in East Orange and ambushed him upon arrival, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II said. Brooks ran down the street to escape the attack and the defendant followed, stabbing him over 10 times, Stephens said.

Baltimore Mom, 23, Killed On Mother’s Day; Repeat Offender Charged With Murder: Police
She was just 23 — and it was Mother’s Day.
Now, a Baltimore man has been charged in connection with the shooting that killed young mother Taniya Gray earlier this month in Southwest Baltimore, according to police.
Tamal Johnson, 22, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, conspiracy, and several firearm offenses after investigators determined he was involved in Gray’s killing on May 11, police said.
The Baltimore Police Department announced his arrest on Wednesday, May 28. Investigators described Johnson as a repeat violent offender.

Woman Fatally Stabbed In Phillipsburg: Prosecutor
A 26-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in Phillipsburg the morning of Friday, May 16, authorities said.
At 3 a.m., officers were flagged down on the 400 block of Anderson Street where they found the woman with stab wounds, the Warren County Prosecutor's Office said. She was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.
The woman, who has not been identified and the alleged perpetrator, who was also not identified, were known to each other, authorities said.
The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
FBI Leaving DC Headquarters, Director Kash Patel Announces
The FBI is leaving its longtime headquarters in Washington, DC, and relocating around 1,500 workers, according to the agency's director, Kash Patel.
The J. Edgar Hoover Building, a low-rise office building located on Pennsylvania Avenue NW, has been the FBI's home base since 1975.
Patel said there were 11,000 FBI employees in a 50-mile radius around Washington, DC.
"That's a third of the workforce," Patel told Fox Business in an interview on Friday, May 16. "A third of the crime doesn't happen here. So we're taking 1,500 of those folks and moving them out.
