What's missing in this plan is information about where the games will be shifted to and what the impact will be on those fields. Based on the football and LAX home schedules it appears Lasell will be down to 20-25 games a year- meaning 175 games or so will need to be played at other venues.
The upper field at the high school that the boys and girls varsity soccer teams use had goal posts placed for pee-wee football. If the intent is to play freshmsn, JV and pee-wee football on that field, your SWCL champion girls will be dodging divots at their home soccer games. Hopefully there's a plan that cares for all boys and girls sports and not one that simply shifts the problem to less visible venues while still leaving the majority of the teams playing on inferior or unsafe fields. There is no "available money". The town had a choice- use some of the money for a turf field or take a small reduction in taxes. The voters opted for smaller taxes. Any new projects require new funding and a commensurate tax increase. View Comment
On my way to work today I voted in favor of the turf field. I’m in favor because we have a unique financial opportunity to significantly upgrade the field with virtually no change in taxes. It’s an opportunity that’s unlikely to come around again. I’m in favor because the field in its current state is the worst of any high school football, lacrosse, field hockey or soccer field in our league. It needs attention that a Summer of “rest” won’t cure. I’m in favor because, despite considerable effort, private funding did not pan out. In all likelihood naming rights would have been a requirement for any significant private contribution. The community has shown it is not in favor of changing the field name. I’m in favor because a turf field will promote equitability among the sports programs- boys and girls. The field is in such bad shape that teams are restricted from using it at times so it is not further degraded. A turf field has no such usage restrictions. Boys and girls teams of different sports can (and will) use the field without adversely impacting the field. The only limitation is scheduling conflicts.
I hope enough of you feel the same way and vote in favor of the field. The community has other priorities that are likely to cause an increase in taxes in the coming years. Now is the time for turf.
