MILLBURY, Mass. — The Oxford High School boys basketball team rode a huge first quarter, jumping out to a big lead and cruising past the Millbury Woolies, 78-46, on Friday night in Oxford.
The Pirates jumped out to a 29-8 lead after the first quarter behind the stellar play of Mike James, who fired in 10 points, and Danny Freeland, who scored eight. Utilizing the press, the Woolies had no answer as Oxford dominated from end to end.
The Woolies fell behind 51-20 at the half, and the game was all but over. Millbury was without star Mike Woll, who scratched with a rib injury. The Woolies again struggled at the free throw line, hitting only 11 of 24 foul shots.
The Woolies got a nice performance from Evan Cano, who fired in 17 points, while Tristan Cano added 10 more. The Woolies will attempt to get back on the winning track Tuesday night when they travel to Grafton. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Freeland led all scorers with 19 points, while James added 18 for the Pirates. All their scoring was in three quarters, as they both rested in the fourth as Oxford went on cruise control. The Pirates, winners of four in a row, travel Monday night to take on the Auburn Rockets.
