MILLBURY, Mass. — The Millbury High boys basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 61-43 to the Shepherd Hill Rams on Friday night at the Millbury High gymnasium.
The Rams (1-1) pressured the Woolies (1-1) from the outset and forced too many turnovers for the Millbury squad to sustain any offense.
The Woolies led early 5-3 after Michael Woll drained a three-point shot and Nicholas Guaragno hit a short jumper. But Shepherd Hill took over and went on an 8-2 run to finish the first quarter up, 11-7.
Millbury stayed close in the second quarter and played hard. But the Rams found the range of three-point shots with some nice work moving the ball around. The Woolies found themselves down at the break, 25-17.
The Woolies came out hot after half-time and scored the first five points to narrow the score to 25-22, but that was as close as they got. Shepherd Hill went on a run, and the Woolies were forced to call timeout to regroup with three minutes left in the third quarter down as they were down by 10.
The Rams pressured the Woolies and pulled away easily. Guaragno had a triple double, pouring in 13 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks. Woll scored 11 points, including three three-pointers, and Tristan Cano scored 10 points. Derek Schulman for the Rams led all scorers with 18 points, including four three-pointers.
The Woolies return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they take on the Grafton Indians at the Millbury High gymnasium.
