MILLBURY, Mass. - The Auburn Rockets beat the Millbury Woolies 6-5 in 11 innings in a thrilling SWCL baseball game that went four extra innings. Mike Vaitkunis rocketed a leadoff homer in the 11th to win the game for the visiting Rockets (11-1) at Millbury High on Monday afternoon.
Vaitkunis was 3-5 on the day with 2 RBIs including the game winner and came on in relief and pitched the final five innings to notch the victory.
In a well played game, the Rockets struck first with two runs in the third inning, with one being unearned on a wild pitch and the other off an RBI single by Vaitkunis, his first of the day.
Millbury would narrow the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning. Luke Bernard drew a one out walk and scored on a double to center by Mike Valastro. But after a single by Ryan Ward to runners at first and third with one out, Valastro would try to score on a wild pitch but was gunned out easily at the plate.
Auburn scored two unearned runs in the sixth to make the lead 4-1, Vaitkunis drilled a liner to left and scored after advancing on an error. After a walk, another run would score on yet another error. But the Woolies roared back in the bottom of the frame to tie the score. Both Justin Brousseau and Luke Bernard hit soft infield singles, setting the stage for Mike Valastro, who took a fastball from Nick Fuller to straight away center an estimated 395 feet for a three run homer to tie the game at four.
Auburn again took the lead in the tenth inning when Tyler Desjardins rocked an RBI double that scored Joe Fahey. Millbury once again tied it up in the bottom of the frame when Joe Kozlowski singled to lead off the bottom of the inning and later scored on an error.
That set the stage for Vaitkunis blast to win the game in the 11th. With the loss, Millbury falls to 5-3 and will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against David Prouty at Millbury High.
