WORCESTER, Mass. – The 224 graduates of St. John's High School's Class of 2012 were told repeatedly during their commencement on Sunday that "to whom much is given, much is expected."

Headmaster Michael Welch encouraged the new graduates to continue to be community leaders even after leaving high school.
"The Class of 2012 has embodied the motto 'to lead is to serve,'" Welch said. He noted that this class helped mark the school's 50th year at the Shrewsbury campus, but encouraged them to look forward rather than back. "You mark the beginning of our next 50 years."
Valedictorian Matthew Barrieau followed his love of books when writing his speech and tried to tell the story of his and his classmates four years at St. John's.
"It's not my story, it's the story of a place, the story of a time, the story of a people, the story of an idea," Barrieau said.
He looked back and talked of the story of his teachers and that of his fellow classmates, but ultimately encouraged his classmates to go out and create their own stories.
"Now our journey is over. The story of how we got to this point defines us, but it is up to us to find our own stories moving forward," Barrieau said.
Barrieau was also awarded the school's Award for Scholastic Excellence. The Xaverian Award was given to a pair of students, Michael Badjo and Benjamin Nason, at the graduation.
The 244 graduates came from towns all over Worcester and Metrowest Counties. The list of graduates is as follows:
