MILLBURY, Mass. — Sometimes a random act of kindness can make all the difference in the world. And for five Millbury police officers, that came while directing traffic at the Shoppes at Blackstone Valley Wednesday.

An unnamed woman drove up to each of the officers and handed them a card with a smile and drove off without a word. Inside the card was a simple message, “Be Kind, the world needs it.” On the opposite side it said, “Honoring the 26 lives lost in Newtown, CT by performing 26 random acts of kindness. You’re #26 Please Pay It Forward.”

In each of the cards was a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card.

All of the police officers were extremely touched by the gesture, Millbury Police Public Affairs Officer Andrea Warpula said.

“This was an extremely unexpected and gracious act,” Warpula said. “Officer Nicole Oliveri, who was given one of the cards was especially touched by it, as were all five of the officers."

The cards were apparently prompted by the "26 Acts of Kindness" movement following a comment by former "Today" show host Ann Curry. After hearing about the shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn., Curry wrote on Twitter, “Imagine if we all committed to 20 acts of kindness for each child lost in Newtown? I'm in. RT #20Acts if YOU R in," she wrote.

Her message quickly went viral and became 26 Acts of Kindness for not only the 20 children but for the six adult educators who died in Connecticut as well.

26. The other 2 are criminals.

I put 100% of the blame on the mother. She should have had those guns locked up in a safe. Specially with a child of that aptitude.

Two more? If it wasn't for the unstable gunman and his whack job mother this never would have happened.

This was a very kind gesture. I would never include the shooter as someone else that died that day. So as far as the note above 26 acts of kindness is what it should be not 28.

That's really nice of her.
