Michael Ellsessa was 16 when he died during a 2010 junior varsity football game. He was tackled and hit in the chest, which fatally stopped his heart. He was a sophomore at Sutton High School but played football for Oxford as part of a co-operative team between the two schools.

He also played ice hockey for Northbridge High School, which fields a co-operative hockey team with Sutton, and was a member of the Sutton High School track and field team during the spring.

His parents, John and Luann Ellsessar, along with brothers, Patrick and Timmy, were on hand Sunday and thanked everyone who raced, walked, volunteered or just wanted to donate to the event.

Like last year, John at the finish line and the first to congratulate runners as they crossed. And many runners did turn out, more than last year, even though there were many road races going on in Central Massachusetts.

"Thanks To all who helped, ran, walked, sponsored, donated, participated, watched the Michael Ellsessar Family Fun Run (5K / 10K). What a tremendous event. All the support, generosity, compassion, prayers, friendship and love are greatly appreciated by me and my family,'' John Ellsessar said following the event.

"I know Michael was smiling down on us from heaven today. I know he is very proud of his town, teammates, band mates, buddies, girlfriend, best friend and everybody else who have been such great supporters and angels to his family and cause. Special Thanks to Amy Sullivan, Cheryl Bechunas, Gabby Colonies, Lisa Jean Clifford, Rich's Road Crew, rhe Sutton schools and all the volunteers - family and friends who help make this day the best."
