Scarsdale Boys Soccer Has High Expectations

SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- David Alemany and Tomas Penfold can understand why an opponent’s perception of the Scarsdale varsity boys’ soccer team would differ be this season. Scarsdale lost nine starters from the 2010 team that won the Section 1 Class AA title and played in the state final four. It was the best season for a Scarsdale boys’ soccer team and capped a four-year run during which the Raiders won the 2007 sectional title and were finalists in 2008.

Based on this, opponents might overlook Scarsdale and not expect much from the Raiders. Alemany and Penfold, the team’s only returning starters, made it clear that Scarsdale will be a good team and the word rebuilding in not in their vocabulary.

“Our expectations are still the same. We want to prove year in and year out that we are a contender," Alemany said. "We lost nine starters, but we have some great players back who didn’t get a chance to play last year. Playing against great players in practice last year helped them and a lot of the guys have stepped up in preseason.”

Five members of the Class of 2011 are currently playing in college. However, before they left for school, the graduates got in a few more kicks with their former teammates.

“The seniors still played with us this summer to help us get ready for the season,” said Penfold, who has verbally committed to Monmouth to join older brother, Andreas. “This meant a lot to us because it shows they care about us, the team and the program. They want us to continue it and want us to be the team to beat.”

Alemany and Penfold will be the go-to offensive players for the Raiders this season. The duo will give opponents fits this season. Penfold said the two have developed a good chemistry, having played together for 13 years.

Alemany said the team has been working well together.

“I am really excited and looking forward to this season,” Alemany said. “We really want to get back and go even further this year.”
